For XiaoXiao, this means art camp. She loves loves loves camp. It's full days of art and play and friends.
Her favorite parts were going to the park daily and the gallery tours. As a bonus, she learned about line, color, texture, shape and pattern. The kids worked with positive and negative space, subtractive methods of drawing, printmaking, sculpture and more. They produced landscapes, still lifes and sketches of a live model. The museum has become a special place for XX; she could probably out-docent the docents on some of the pieces.
She and her self-portrait were even on a local morning news show! John and I were astonished to see the story open with the journalist holding up XX's self-portrait. A short interview with XX followed.
On the last day, parents and friends were invited to see a showing of the campers' artwork. Walls were filled with prints, charcoal drawings, tape line drawings and colorful masks. Tables held self-portraits, sculptures and tissue paper-mache bowls. Each camper also brought home a large portfolio of work done over the week. The output was incredible.
But there was something even better cultivated ...
